Finding and photographing Grizzly Bears in the lower Rocky Mountains can be challenging. They are not as easy to find as Black Bears and prefer to keep to higher elevations. During Spring and Fall they can be found in lower elevations foraging for food. Just because you see a bear doesn't mean you will get a good photograph of it. You have to be at the right place at the right time, and I find myself waiting for hours for them to move into the right place. Usually the bear has something else on its mind, and doesnt want to be photographed. When this happens just enjoy the special moment instead of forcing the bear to move to get a photo which will actually scare it off. This bear walked one end of the valley to the other and I kept quiet and still not to scare the bear. He landed up walking straight towards me before going off into the bushes. All in all took over two hours.

Great looking photo and advice. I agree 100%. Photographing bears in the mountains is a lot tougher than those made to order photo ops at places like Brooks Falls or Knight Inlet. Even when a bear is in a good position, they are head down eating weeds 95% of the time. Patience is the key.... and luck. You are good at it!
